Ready for an active and unforgettable day in the beautiful nature of Chiang Mai? Let me take you on one of my favorite hikes or trail runs in Chiang Mai. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed jungle walk or a challenging mountain climb with stunning views, there's something for everyone.
Option 1: The Monks Trail – Perfect for Families and Beginners
We start the day at an easy pace, enjoying a delicious breakfast or a fresh cup of coffee at one of Chiang Mai’s cozy cafés. Then, we begin our adventure on the Monks Trail, a historic path once used by monks to reach the peaceful Wat Pha Lat temple.
This 3- to 4-hour Chiang Mai hike is ideal for beginners and families with children. Along the way, we walk through quiet jungle paths, enjoy scenic viewpoints, and pass small waterfalls. The hike ends at the tranquil Wat Pha Lat, a hidden gem nestled in nature.
It’s the perfect morning activity for those who want to experience the natural beauty of Chiang Mai’s mountains without too much effort. I recently did this hike with Joost and Gemma—they loved the peaceful surroundings and the relaxed, nature-filled atmosphere.
Option 2: Challenging Hike with Trail Running – For the Adventurous
For more experienced hikers and sporty travelers, I offer a more intense option. This route involves a climb of over 1,100 meters elevation gain, and is designed for those in good physical shape. We start early in the morning and begin a tough but rewarding ascent toward a breathtaking summit.
Around midday, we stop for a well-deserved lunch at the top, where we take in the panoramic mountain views and recharge. The descent can be taken at your own pace—and for those looking for an extra challenge, parts of the route can be turned into a trail run.
This full experience takes about 6 hours and is a fantastic outdoor workout in Chiang Mai. I often do this hike myself as part of my training. Last time, I went with Patrick and Marloes—both experienced athletes—who found it an exciting challenge with stunning views as the ultimate reward.
