Last week, I had the pleasure of spending two unforgettable days with Ronald and Yvonne on a private tour through Chiang Dao, one of the most peaceful and beautiful regions just north of Chiang Mai.
Day 1: Sticky Waterfalls and the Chiang Dao Cave
We started our journey early in the morning with a hotel pickup in Chiang Mai and drove north toward our first destination—the famous Sticky Waterfalls. These unique limestone falls are known for their naturally grippy surface, which allows you to walk up the waterfalls without slipping. It’s a refreshing, playful experience surrounded by lush greenery and cool mountain air—an ideal way to kick off the day.
After our water-filled adventure, it was time for lunch. We found a small, local roadside eatery where we enjoyed simple yet delicious Thai dishes. The laid-back atmosphere and warm hospitality of the owners made it a truly authentic local experience.
In the afternoon, we visited the fascinating Chiang Dao Cave, a vast network of chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and ancient Buddhist shrines. We explored the lit sections of the cave, admiring the natural rock formations and soaking in the peaceful, mystical atmosphere that makes this one of the top cultural attractions in Chiang Dao.
For the night, we stayed at The Nest, a charming lodge tucked away in nature. The peaceful surroundings and cozy ambiance made it easy to relax. In the evening, we enjoyed a fantastic Thai dinner, as The Nest is well-known for its excellent cuisine—and this evening did not disappoint.
Day 2: A Jungle Temple and Scenic Drive
We began the next day with a visit to Wat Tham Pha Plong, a tranquil temple hidden deep in the jungle, accessible by a staircase of 500 steps. As we climbed, we passed inspiring Buddhist quotes etched along the way, leading us to a peaceful sanctuary with panoramic views over the green hills of Chiang Dao.
After this spiritual stop, we took an alternative scenic route back to Chiang Mai, winding through the mountains and valleys of Northern Thailand. Along the way, we paused for photos at several viewpoints, capturing the breathtaking landscapes that make this region so special.
A Trip to Remember
Back in Chiang Mai, we reflected on a fantastic 2-day trip full of nature, culture, and authentic Thai food. Ronald and Yvonne loved the balance of adventure and relaxation, and for me, it was a joy to share these special places with them.
