This wasn’t a day with a fixed plan—just a shared mission: to taste as much amazing Thai food in Chiang Mai as possible. Together with Floris and Patrick, we wandered through the city, discovering local favorites and hidden food gems in Chiang Mai.
Our First Stop: Som Tam Udon – A Must-Visit Local Favorite
We kicked off our Chiang Mai food tour at one of my absolute favorite places: Som Tam Udon. This is the kind of restaurant I want to take everyone to—because the food is always outstanding.
We filled our table with dishes: spicy som tam with fermented fish, crispy fried chicken, fragrant larb, and of course, a generous portion of sticky rice to bring it all together. The balance of sour, spicy, and umami flavors was perfect, and we took our time to savor every bite. For anyone who loves authentic Northern Thai cuisine, this is a must.
A Hidden Gem for Pad Kra Pao Lovers
Later in the day, we visited another personal favorite—a tiny restaurant tucked away from the crowds, known only to a few locals. It’s my go-to place for one of the best Pad Kra Pao dishes in Chiang Mai.
But this wasn’t your standard chicken or pork version. We had a special beef Pad Kra Pao, perfectly stir-fried with crispy holy basil and a serious chili kick. It came with a rich, slow-cooked beef broth on the side—deep in flavor and full of comfort. The chef, cooking right beside us in the open kitchen, clearly put his heart into every plate.
Ending the Day in Loi Kroh – A Slice of Chiang Mai Nightlife
To wrap up our food adventure in Chiang Mai, we headed to Loi Kroh Road, a lively street famous for its mix of bars, bright neon signs, and nightlife. Among the hustle and bustle, we found a relaxed spot, grabbed a few cold drinks, and reflected on the day.
It was a perfect ending to a day filled with bold flavors, great conversation, and the reminder that Chiang Mai always has more to offer—especially for those willing to explore beyond the obvious.
